HALLUX RIGIDUS

CAUSE

Arthritis in the big toe joint is called Hallus Rigidus. The joint becomes swollen and painful with movement and walking. It is often possible to feel spurs on the top of the joint. Movement of the big toe joint decreases gradually.

TREATMENT

Non-operative treatment includes wearing stiff-soled shoes and steroid injections into the joint.

The most common surgical procedures are removing the spurs from the joint or fusing the joint to make it stiff.
