My wife and I are very happy to be members of the Eugene-Springfield community. In addition to providing a wonderful environment for our 3 children, it has given us easy access to our favorite leisure activities, including hiking, skiing, and spending time on the coast. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife and children, traveling, exercising, and watching collegiate and professional sports.
"I cannot begin to express my feelings towards the Slocum Center. I don't think there are enough adjectives to describe the experience. Everyone, and I mean everyone, is willing to assist you in whatever capacity you need and does so with a genuine smile. It is plain that the people there enjoy what they do. I had a total knee replacement and was given a book that took me through every phase of the process from pre-surgery exercises to going home and what to expect in therapy. Nothing was a surprise. Yes, I could have gone to a doctor closer to home but I took the advice of people who have lived here longer and they all said go to Eugene. I am so glad I did. I just love Dr. Shah and am confident that should I need anything else in orthopedics done, Dr. Shah will be my go to guy. Thank you all for being there for premier care and unending compassion. You all are the epitome of what the medical profession should be and the gold standard by which all should follow." -- Joy C.
"My visits with Dr. Shah were more than I expected. He was courteous, very professional, and to the point. I asked him to not "sugar-coat" his diagnosis and to tell me the good, bad, and the ugly about my deteriorating hips. Because of this, I was able to go into surgery with a very positive attitude; knowing full well what was going to happen and what could happen if there were problems. Personally, I would rather know what to expect, both good and bad, and make any decisions from an informed standpoint rather than making un-informed decisions on the fly. As it stands right now, the double total hip replacement surgery was a total success and I know what I can and can't do to increase my recovery time and that has helped me immensely. The staff that Dr. Shah assembled for the pre-op interviews, the post-op interviews, and the required care in between times, has been outstanding in my opinion. He will get my highest recommendations if anyone I talk with needs a reference to a reputable doctor for a hip replacement procedure." -- Richard S.
"I love the experience I have had at the Slocum Center. Everyone treats you like you are the only patient they are seeing. I have suggested other people go to the Slocum Center and they have had a great experience also. They even went to same doctor. Dr. Shah is great!" -- Gary H.
"I had a degenerative disease of both hips, which is causing me a lot of pain and making it so I couldn't walk without my walker. I am a veteran and was on a waiting list at the VA for hip replacement surgery. The wait was to be longer than a year and by then my hips would be inoperable. I decided to look in to having the surgery done privately. I was in so much pain. I couldn’t travel, so I decided to call the hospital to get a referral. They recommended Slocum Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. I looked over the information on the doctors who do hip replacements and chose Dr. Shah. I found him to be very truthful with me. He told me I was a very high-risk patient because I had had a kidney transplant two years ago and I was on medicine, which made me very susceptible to infection. I also had osteoporosis pretty bad, which makes my bones somewhat brittle. I told him if he would go ahead and do the surgery I was willing to risk it.
I found the hip replacement program of Slocum Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine to be excellent from start to finish! They gave me a notebook that outlined the whole program from a month before surgery to a year after, which gave each step along the way. They literally led me by the hand and supported me all the way. It has been about 5 months from the first surgery and 3 months from the second since I had them and I am recuperating very well from both. Dr. Shah has followed me about every 3 months up to now and my x-rays show that my new hips are healing fine. I am now able to walk with a cane without any pain! I'm looking forward to walking without it soon. I believe Dr. Shah is a great surgeon and I thank him and the staff at Slocum Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine for doing such a great job for me. I recommend them highly to anyone who needs surgery!" -- Bill H.
""Wonderful" is the word that best describes my experience at Slocum Center. I needed a hip replacement surgery and had 2 close friends who highly recommended Slocum Center. Originally, I made an appointment with Dr. Jewett. At the time, he was scheduling surgery 5 months out. Another friend told me she had surgery by Dr. Shah and he was scheduling 3 months out. I called Slocum to see if Dr. Shah had any earlier openings and he did. I scheduled an appointment with him. I was extremely pleased with both Dr. Jewett and Dr. Shah. They were both very professional and caring doctors. Since Dr. Shah had an opening before the end of the calendar year, I requested to be seen by him and he was the one who performed the surgery. I could not have asked for better care from ALL of the personnel at Slocum Center. I was more than pleased with the results of my surgery and the follow up, I have since recommended Slocum Center to several people who needed hip or knee replacement. They are all as satisfied as I was. I was treated as an individual rather than a "number.” And the best part is, is that my hip replacement feels like my own. I was back playing tennis 7 months after the surgery and I don't even know I have an artificial hip." -- Lucia B.
"I am very pleased with both Dr. Jones and Dr. Shah in how they listened to what I had to say and did not make me feel rushed, like they must get on to the next patient. I had different surgeries done by each doctor and am very happy with the out come. I am 75 years young and now back to playing golf and bowling on two different leagues and pain free, thanks to the care those two great doctors gave me." -- Patricia L.
"I had a total left hip replacement. Everything is going great. It has been 9 days since my surgery, and I am walking with one crutch. The swelling in my leg is going down every day. As far as pain is concerned, I have not had any pain from the surgery itself, just some pain from sore muscles from physical therapy and using muscles I haven't used for almost 18 months. But looking forward to the day I will lay aside my crutch and walk normally again. Getting back to the things that I have missed since all of this started. Thank you Dr. Shah and staff at River Bend Hospital." -- Howard L.
"Thanks to the surgical skills of the amazing yet humble Dr. Steven Shah and the entire staff at Slocum Center and River Bend Hospital. My bilateral hip surgery performed on June 14, 2013, which is not an often-performed surgery, became the beginning of a new life for me. When I was diagnosed with congenital hip dysplasia, I was shocked. As a teacher, I am always on my feet teaching and trying to mentor students for long hours each day. The pain was unyielding; I could barely walk. However, I worked until the last day of school for students and prayed for the surgery day to "come and go". I am thrilled to say that because of Dr. Shah, the staff, and the caring and professionalism of the entire nursing staff, I have been given a new life. I thank my Maker each and every day for the "Super Star" Dr. Shah as he is referred by all at River Bend Hospital. God Bless and thank you all" -- Deborah W.
"I am so happy with the whole process leading up to and after my knee replacement. From the minute I saw Dr. Shah, my life took a positive turn. The whole team at Slocum Center is very organized and thorough. Dr. Shah is both professional and personable. He was willing to answer all my questions from start to finish. The surgery and recovery were better than I could have imagined. Three weeks after surgery, I was able to walk better and with less pain then the previous two years. It has now been three months since my surgery and I feel like a new person. Thank you Dr. Shah and Slocum Center for the amazing results." -- Holley M.
"I am a 56-year-old female, and slightly overweight/ I used to break and train horses during my earlier years, training horses runs in my family. After getting bucked off of one too many horses, I ended up with three missing discs in my lower back. In addition to my 'football knee', I have been a mess for almost thirty years. I am not the most graceful person either so consequently I ended up with some serious issues with my right knee and my lower back. This past year I was informed--due to yet another 'almost put my nose in the dirt' fall in November 2012 that it was time for a knee replacement.
I put the knee off as long as I could, but my neurosurgeon won't touch my back until my base, (knee), was fixed. So, after getting no less than ten referrals for Dr. Shah, (one of which was my Mom), I had my right knee replaced on April 19, 2013. I flew through the surgery, four-day hospital stay, as we live in Coos Bay, and my recuperation afterwards. I had great physical therapists here in Coos Bay and my progress was steadily uphill. At three months to the day, I've been told by those around me that I am a walking miracle as I don't even walk with a limp. I do still have 'ouchie' days if I try to do too much so I try to cut myself some slack when I do hurt. Dr. Shah is phenomenal as a caring doctor and surgeon. I will recommend him to anyone who needs to have knee or hip replacements. His bedside manner cannot be equaled. I am so thankful for Dr. Shah! God Bless." -- Anni A.
