Favorite Activities

My wife and I are very happy to be members of the Eugene-Springfield community. In addition to providing a wonderful environment for our 3 children, it has given us easy access to our favorite leisure activities, including hiking, skiing, and spending time on the coast. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife and children, traveling, exercising, and watching collegiate and professional sports.

Patient Reviews

"I am a very active person. I had been dealing with knee pain for about 4 years and it was continuing to increase. I had bilateral knee replacement surgery in October of 2014. I felt pretty strong and confident going into surgery but there is always a small bit of fear of not knowing precisely how the surgery would go. My fears were unfounded and the surgery went very well. I did all of the exercises prescribed before surgery and followed the physical therapy after surgery. My recovery was fantastic! I know the folks at Slocum do and incredible job, but I feel that after surgery a good bit of the responsibility for my recovery was on me. I'm a rower and it was extremely important to me to be able to start rowing again as soon as possible. I was rigorous with my exercise and started doing small stints on my rowing machine about 4 months after my surgery. I started walking 1 mile a day at about 3 months post surgery. During this time I also continued to do all the physical therapy work. I was able to get back on the water rowing in March of this year, and was able to compete in regattas both in the spring and fall. At a little over one year after my surgery I'm back to doing everything I was doing before with NO PAIN!! I'm walking 2-3 miles a day, lifting weights, rowing regularly, and couldn't be more pleased with my recovery. I feel incredibly grateful to Dr. Shah and the team at Slocum. They made it possible for me to continue a very active and happy lifestyle!!" – Debbe C.

"I had a total knee operation performed by Dr. Shah. The entire experience was a very good one. I had great results, participated in a U or O study, and had a rapid recovery. I believe that a lot of the speed in my recovery was due to my preparation prior to surgery, the great job Dr. Shah did, and the physical therapy I received at Slocum. I started playing doubles tennis just 15 weeks after surgery, and have been playing 4 or 5 days a week since. I am as mobile as most of my fellow tennis players, which is due to the lack of knee pain. Thank you, Dr. Shah, and the entire Slocum team." -- Mike B.

"I had a full left hip replacement at Riverbend Hospital in Eugene, and all I can say is the experience was fantastic! From my doctors, the nurses, and all the CNAs, my treatment was first class. My recovery is going extremely well, and the only thing I can say is "why didn't I have the surgery done sooner?"  I want to thank everyone involved in my successful story." -- Michael S.

"After living with knee pain daily for 42 years, following a severe injury at age 16, I finally decided to have a serious discussion about having knee replacement surgery late last year. I was fortunate enough to wind up in the care of Dr. Steven Shah at the Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. Dr. Shah's reputation as an excellent surgeon had preceded him, but I was really impressed at how down to earth and easy to talk to he was. He outlined all the options and concerns he had about my knee, and had answers to all of my questions. He was honest and up front about what to expect and that because my knee had not gone fully straight for 40 years, I needed to take my therapy seriously. He also informed me that there would be some discomfort, which there was, and that it would get better, which it did.

Long story short, I was able to wean from the pain meds after 3 weeks, was back to work after 5 weeks, and now at 12 weeks, I am extremely pleased with my outcome. I can go up and down stairs with no pain for the first time in many years. My knee straightens out fully, which means I have a normal stride for the first time since I was in my teens. Dr. Shah suggested that I stick to indoor workouts on my wind trainer until this weekend. I just got back from my first effort out on the roads. I completed 18 miles, which isn't much, but it sure felt great to get back out there with no knee problems whatsoever. I am looking forward to a summer on the bike. I couldn't be more pleased! Thanks to all. Slocum is world class in all aspects, and the most efficient clinic I have ever experienced." -- Dan H.

"I cannot begin to express my feelings towards the Slocum Center. I don't think there are enough adjectives to describe the experience. Everyone, and I mean everyone, is willing to assist you in whatever capacity you need and does so with a genuine smile. It is plain that the people there enjoy what they do. I had a total knee replacement and was given a book that took me through every phase of the process from pre-surgery exercises to going home and what to expect in therapy. Nothing was a surprise. Yes, I could have gone to a doctor closer to home but I took the advice of people who have lived here longer and they all said go to Eugene. I am so glad I did. I just love Dr. Shah and am confident that should I need anything else in orthopedics done, Dr. Shah will be my go to guy. Thank you all for being there for premier care and unending compassion. You all are the epitome of what the medical profession should be and the gold standard by which all should follow." -- Joy C.

"My visits with Dr. Shah were more than I expected. He was courteous, very professional, and to the point. I asked him to not "sugar-coat" his diagnosis and to tell me the good, bad, and the ugly about my deteriorating hips. Because of this, I was able to go into surgery with a very positive attitude; knowing full well what was going to happen and what could happen if there were problems. Personally, I would rather know what to expect, both good and bad, and make any decisions from an informed standpoint rather than making un-informed decisions on the fly. As it stands right now, the double total hip replacement surgery was a total success and I know what I can and can't do to increase my recovery time and that has helped me immensely. The staff that Dr. Shah assembled for the pre-op interviews, the post-op interviews, and the required care in between times, has been outstanding in my opinion. He will get my highest recommendations if anyone I talk with needs a reference to a reputable doctor for a hip replacement procedure." -- Richard S.

"I love the experience I have had at the Slocum Center. Everyone treats you like you are the only patient they are seeing. I have suggested other people go to the Slocum Center and they have had a great experience also. They even went to same doctor. Dr. Shah is great!" -- Gary H.

"I had a degenerative disease of both hips, which is causing me a lot of pain and making it so I couldn't walk without my walker. I am a veteran and was on a waiting list at the VA for hip replacement surgery. The wait was to be longer than a year and by then my hips would be inoperable. I decided to look in to having the surgery done privately. I was in so much pain. I couldn’t travel, so I decided to call the hospital to get a referral. They recommended Slocum Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. I looked over the information on the doctors who do hip replacements and chose Dr. Shah. I found him to be very truthful with me. He told me I was a very high-risk patient because I had had a kidney transplant two years ago and I was on medicine, which made me very susceptible to infection. I also had osteoporosis pretty bad, which makes my bones somewhat brittle. I told him if he would go ahead and do the surgery I was willing to risk it.

I found the hip replacement program of Slocum Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine to be excellent from start to finish! They gave me a notebook that outlined the whole program from a month before surgery to a year after, which gave each step along the way.  They literally led me by the hand and supported me all the way. It has been about 5 months from the first surgery and 3 months from the second since I had them and I am recuperating very well from both. Dr. Shah has followed me about every 3 months up to now and my x-rays show that my new hips are healing fine. I am now able to walk with a cane without any pain! I'm looking forward to walking without it soon. I believe Dr. Shah is a great surgeon and I thank him and the staff at Slocum Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine for doing such a great job for me. I recommend them highly to anyone who needs surgery!" -- Bill H.

""Wonderful" is the word that best describes my experience at Slocum Center.  I needed a hip replacement surgery and had 2 close friends who highly recommended Slocum Center.  Originally, I made an appointment with Dr. Jewett. At the time, he was scheduling surgery 5 months out. Another friend told me she had surgery by Dr. Shah and he was scheduling 3 months out. I called Slocum to see if Dr. Shah had any earlier openings and he did. I scheduled an appointment with him.  I was extremely pleased with both Dr. Jewett and Dr. Shah. They were both very professional and caring doctors.  Since Dr. Shah had an opening before the end of the calendar year, I requested to be seen by him and he was the one who performed the surgery.  I could not have asked for better care from ALL of the personnel at Slocum Center.  I was more than pleased with the results of my surgery and the follow up, I have since recommended Slocum Center to several people who needed hip or knee replacement. They are all as satisfied as I was.  I was treated as an individual rather than a "number.”  And the best part is, is that my hip replacement feels like my own. I was back playing tennis 7 months after the surgery and I don't even know I have an artificial hip." -- Lucia B.

"I am very pleased with both Dr. Jones and Dr. Shah in how they listened to what I had to say and did not make me feel rushed, like they must get on to the next patient.  I had different surgeries done by each doctor and am very happy with the out come.  I am 75 years young and now back to playing golf and bowling on two different leagues and pain free, thanks to the care those two great doctors gave me." -- Patricia L.
