Our joint replacement and revision surgeons integrate all aspects of specialized care by collectively combining their knowledge, experience, and expertise as the foundation of RENEW The Joint Replacement Center at Slocum.

Our orthopedic surgeons are specialty-trained in adult reconstruction and have dedicated their practices to this specialized field of study. With their commitment to continued education through attending courses, lecturing, writing, and actively learning the newest procedures and techniques, our surgeons are the most highly skilled joint replacement surgeons in the area.

Lower Risk

Our experts offer joint replacement on an outpatient basis for patients meeting certain criteria at our state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center, Slocum Surgery Center. Studies have shown that these procedures, when performed in an ambulatory surgery center, have a lower risk of infection compared to those performed in the hospital environment.

Faster Recovery

As dedicated experts, our surgeons excel at performing a wide range of joint procedures using minimally invasive techniques. These less invasive treatment options offer less scarring, smaller incisions, and less pain, allowing patients to get back to the activities they love faster.

Improved Outcomes

Our joint surgeons are committed to improving patient outcomes by using the latest evidence-based treatments and state-of-the-art technology. Our surgeons also provide comprehensive education and support throughout the entire process, ensuring an exceptional patient experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Joint replacement surgery is when a skilled surgeon removes damaged cartilage and bone from a joint and replaces it with an artificial implant.
Since joint replacement is an elective surgery, the decision focuses on your quality of life and functional mobility. It is a very individual decision. For some people, the determining factor is the amount of pain they experience during daily activities or at night that interrupts sleep. For others, it is the functional limitations that interfere with desired activities. Your surgeon can assist you with this decision, but ultimately, it will be your decision as to when the time is right to have joint replacement surgery.
The amount of pain after surgery varies. Perception of pain is an individual experience, which is why our doctors and staff will work with you to adjust your medications to minimize pain. You will experience pain, especially in the first two weeks. However, ice, elevation, deep breathing, relaxation, and mediation can help minimize your pain in addition to the provided medication.
Following your joint replacement surgery, you may set off the metal detector type of scanner at the security checkpoint in airports. However, the newer body scanners use different technology that can visualize the joint replacement and will not cause you a delay in the security lines.
While showering is typically allowed the day after surgery, we strongly recommend that you avoid immersion of your incision in water, either in a bathtub or hot tub, until your surgeon has given you the okay to do so at a follow-up appointment. Even after the incision initially appears healed, the skin is still fragile.
It is generally recommended that you wait four to six weeks after surgery to resume driving. However, this will depend upon the type of joint you had replaced as well as how you are progressing through your recovery. In addition, you should not drive as long as you are still taking narcotic pain medication during the day, as this may affect your ability to react quickly and make good decisions.
Yes, physical therapy is an important part of the recovery process, and it will help you gain range of motion and muscle strength. Typically, it begins the day after surgery and will last for several weeks.
After your joint replacement surgery, there will be certain activities or things you should avoid for the first six weeks after surgery. This will depend upon which joint you had replaced. Your surgeon will go over these restrictions with you after surgery as well as let you know when you can start participating in some of them again as your recovery progresses.
