About

I originally became interested in sports medicine after a knee injury in high school, and went on to to study athletic training in college. From there I attended medical school and began my career as a pediatrician.

Today, I serve as a chair for the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA), and serve on the National Federation of State High School (NFSH) as a member of the sports medicine advisory committee. My practice at Slocum allows me to blend my passion for caring for young athletes, as well as helping people of all ages back to active lives.

In my off time, I enjoy cycling, reading, gardening and maintaining our yard and property.

Testimonials

“Over the past year I have had two major injuries. I broke my right leg; the fibula and just recently I had injured my shoulder. Both of my injuries occurred on my bike, which affected my baseball season. I went to Slocum both times and they treated me with much care and respect. I had trust that they would make my injuries better and I still have trust that they will make them better in the future if needed. Currently I am on my three week mark in physical therapy and I am right back on track to start throwing again. Thank you Slocum for all the work you have put in for me!”

Testimonials

“My son Jordan went to see Dr. Koester after he had back problems that kept getting worse. Our family physician referred him, and Dr. Koester diagnosed him with Scheuermann’s disease. He also referred him to the Shriners Hospital for more help. We appreciate Slocum so much. Jordan was also a patient there three years ago for a hand fracture. It was nice to be able to go where we had been before. Slocum Center is a very welcoming place to be, and I’m thankful it is here locally for us!”

Testimonials

Testimonials

“After a lifetime of knee problems and four surgeries, I once again found myself with a major problem. Being self employed and cancelled insurance years ago and living on the coast with nowhere to go, I called Slocum Center and got in the next day to see Dr. Koester. After X-rays and evaluating my knee, he said it is in bad shape but a replacement at this time was not the best option. At 59 years old, he said I needed to try and get some more years out of what I have. Plus, the cost is out of my range. He gave me an option for a series of injections that may help me. Then he said let me see if the drug manufacture will help with the cost as it was expensive and he will let me know. In a few days, I got a call with an appointment to come five weeks in a row to start treatment and I was ecstatic to get the help. Well here I am, three month later doing great. Considering I thought I was done being able to work, I am a contractor and commercial fisherman. I cannot thank Dr. Koester enough for his compassion and the help he gave me. What a rare thing in these times we live in. To all the people at the Slocum Center, I want to thank you for your commitment to excellence in all you do. I am at a loss to say enough. Thank you so much.”

Testimonials

“All of my family have seen Dr. Koester since he joined the practice when it was in Springfield. Dr. Koester knows and remembers us. He is sensitive, thoughtful and thorough, taking the necessary time to examine and explain. We all like him very much and respect his judgment.”

Testimonials

“Dr. Koester has treated each of our children and we have seen over and over again his gentleness and expertise with them. He always figures out what is the problem and the best treatment to help them. When our daughter’s injuries spiraled out of control last year with unusual consequences he knew exactly what she needed and went above and beyond to get her help. Other kids with the same issue have gone years misdiagnosed and consequently have gotten worse. Our daughter was diagnosed immediately by Dr. Koester. And when she became worse he knew how to get her the help she needed. We are grateful for all he has done for our family.”
