  • “From my initial evaluation & diagnosis by Dr. Shapiro to my final follow up post surgery, I was/am impressed with his direct communication approach. Others I have spoken with thought he was too dry or even condescending but I am not left with this impression. His confident demeanor and direct questions to me made both of our expectations and goals unified. My surgery was not at all what was expected based on range of motion and MRI analysis, and Dr. Shapiro had to react and change plans based on findings. My surgery ended up much more involved than was first thought, and thus my recovery was much longer and more involved than first thought. I am 9 months post surgery and am very much pleased with my outcome to date. At the 1 year mark (our goal) I should be 100% and have no doubts I will be there. Dr. Shapiro literally changed my life, and I am forever thankful! I would also like to compliment Leslie in physical therapy who was a huge enabler for me in my long process of recovery!”

  • In March 2016, Dr Shapiro performed left shoulder orthoscopic surgery, removing a bone spur and repairing a minor rotator cuff tear, along with various arthritic cleanup. In the 8 months since, I have recovered 100% of my strength and mobility in my left shoulder. I am 74 years old, and I play 18 holes of golf 2-3 times a week, I swim 15-20 laps in the pool at 55-60 second intefvals 3-4 times a week, and I lift weights in the gym 3-4 times a week, now bench pressing up to 200 lbs. Subsequent to my shoulder surgery, Dr Shapiro also diagnosed both knees to be candidates for replacement due to the lack of cartlige. He recommended and administered visco injections in both knees over a 5 week period of time. Since then I have full use of both knees for cycling, walking and golfing with minimal or no pain. Overall, I rate my experience with Slocum and Dr Shapiro as outstanding and wouldn't think of going elsewhere for orthopedic care. I plan to continue triathlon training and competition this spring and summer. Dick Shores 2013 Northwest age group triathlon champion- age 70-74

  • “I am a PACU nurse. Matt has been our orthopedic surgeon for over a decade. ACL repair on our 15 year old soccer player (who went on to play college and pro), shoulder rotator cuff repair on my husband as well as a later bicep avulsion repair, and my elbow break and ongoing knee issues that require injections of cortisone and hyaluronic acid. Just as his patients did I recovered, we always recover well, without complications, and healed nicely to a better state.”

  • “I had a torn tendon in my left elbow which the doctor cut loose and re-attached into the upper arm bone marrow. I was very happy with the job he did and how he explained the procedure and things that may later occur.”

  • “Dr. Shapiro is one of the best doctors I've ever been to. He is treating my shoulders for bone spurs, bursitis, arthritis, etc. He is conservative in treatment (didn't rush me into surgery) but also realistic about prognosis. At appointments he is attentive to me and my questions and explains thing in ways "normal" (i.e. non-medical) people can understand. I never feel rushed. He draws great pictures of what is going on and shares X-rays and other photos with you so you can actually SEE what he sees. His office staff is efficient & friendly; the Slocum Center is one of the most efficiently run facilities I've encountered. I have done office management consulting and whoever set up their system did a superior job. I appreciate Dr. Shapiro very much and highly recommend him to others.”

  • “My shoulder has been extremely painful for a couple of months when I arrived at Slocum to see Dr. Shapiro. The entire experience was a 5-star!  From the check-in, to the X-ray to the exam it was all managed in a warm, yet professional way. Dr. Shapiro clearly gave me my options explaining in detail that I could understand.  The injection has helped my shoulder 90% and my hope is it will continue. If the problem arises again, the first call will be to Dr. Shapiro's office.  Thank you to all of you.”

  • “This shoulder surgery was so smooth. Not at all the frightening stories friends had shared. Dr. Shapiro was so informative and professional in my pre-op visit. Very warm and kind after surgery. It was a very positive experience.”

  • “In October of 2015, I partially tore the meniscus in my left knee, making it painful to walk and limiting my ability to hike. After surgery in February of 2016 by Dr. Shapiro and a two-month recovery period, I was able to resume hiking and just returned from an eight-day pain-free trip to the canyons of southern Utah. My deepest appreciation to Dr. Shapiro for his skill and patiently explaining the procedure.”

  • “Over a period of years and several injuries, my shoulders were  becoming the one thing that interfered with my quality of life. I struggled with the pain in my right shoulder many years always thinking that the pain would go away. A life changing event, an injury to my left shoulder while fighting a fire, led me to Slocum Orthopedics. Dr. Shapiro  performed surgery on both of my shoulders. Today I feel like a new man. My shoulders do not hurt and now when I lift items, in a normal daily routine, there is no pain. But more than just performing the surgeries, Dr. Shapiro and his team made me feel that I was in good hands. The stellar bedside manner, in his explanations of why I hurt and what he would do to help, made me feel comfortable with the surgeries and trusting of the Slocum team. Dr. Shapiro and the Slocum Orthopedics family made me feel like I was a member of the family as well. I hope that I never have to return to Slocum Orthopedics again as a patient, but if I am ever again in need of good medicine, I will return with a smile. Thank you Slocum Orthopedics, and in particular, Dr. Shapiro for being both caring and extremely professional.”

  • “The staff at the facility were efficient, pleasant and answered questions when asked. Dr. Shapiro was superior. He explained the problem, was thorough in his examination and discussed prognosis and follow up. He demonstrated rehab exercises I needed to focus on. He was also reassuring regarding my return to prior activity level.   Thank you Slocum. I hope I do not need your services in the future, however I would not hesitate to refer family or friends or return if need be.”

  • “I wanted to take the time to comment on my experience with Slocum Orthopedics, and in particular, Dr. Matthew Shapiro, concerning my biIateral shoulder surgeries. I spent the first 7 years of my working career as an Off-Bearer of a head-rig at Eel River sawmill in Northern California. I was young and strong and had no idea that the kind of work I was doing might contribute to shoulder pain in later years. I moved on from mill work in 1982 and moved to Ketchikan, Alaska and begin a new career as a Fire Fighter. I worked at that job for 27 years, starting as a "rookie" firefighter and ending as the Assistant Fire Chief. Fire Fighting and the training required to do it safely and efficiently requires a lot of heavy lifting. Ladders, hose, nozzles and other appliances that are used in that trade are heavy and cumbersome. Add to that the unpredictable things that are encountered in emergency situations and it is easy to see how it takes a toll on those in the service. After retiring in 2010, I relocated to Harrisburg Oregon as Chief of that fire department. By then I was having a substantial amount of pain in my right shoulder. In January of 2014 I first Visited Slocum Orthopedics and had my first consult with Dr. Shapiro. After seeing the x-rays and a thorough exam, Dr. Shapiro recommended surgery for my right shoulder. I hesitated at the thought of surgery at that time. On February14th, 2014, less than a month after that consult, I injured my left shoulder while fighting a fire near Harrisburg. I was treated for a soft tissue injury for about 4 months. When it seemed that the injury was not getting better I had an MRI which revealed a tear-in the shoulder. I was scheduled for shoulder surgery on August 28th, 2014. The result of the surgery has been nothing short of fabulous. My left shoulder healed in the 12 weeks that Dr. Shapiro had predicted. My range of motion and the strength in my left shoulder made me feel 20 years younger than my age of 63. I recovered fully from that surgery and was scheduled for surgery on my right shoulder in October of this year. I am about 7 weeks into my recovery and am convinced that the outcome for my right shoulder will be as good, if not better, than my left shoulder. The outcome of both surgeries would seem to be enough to write about....but it is not. The outstanding professionalism of Slocum Orthopedics, the kindness shown by staff, the technical skill of Dr. Shapiro, and the overall coordination of a winning team has given me a new lease on life. Thank you Slocum Orthopedics, and the entire team at Slocum. I would, and will, recommend the fine service you provide to anyone who is suffering with pain from injury of a joint. Thank you Dr. Matthew Shapiro for showing compassion, explaining my options, for being the consummate professional surgeon you are, and for just being a heck of a nice guy.”

  • “Everybody was very helpful. Even though my mind was moving a little slow from a stroke, Dr. Shapiro got through to me. I put him through a lot, but he kept seeing me. Finally, I have the operation on my arm. I 'm feeling a lot better in a small amount of time. Dr. Shapiro and his staff are very good at their jobs. Thanks a lot!”
  • “From walking into their office to leaving the front door, Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine is a compassionate, highly competent, and time effective experience. I will not see any other doctor for my orthopedic needs. Dr. Shapiro is fantastic and thorough. He not only listens, he understands the problem. I highly recommend the Slocum Center.”
  • “I had a rotator cuff repair and a bone spur removed. I had little to no pain from the procedure. I am getting my full movement back. I have no pain or aching like I did before the repair. I feel that the surgery was successful and Dr. Shapiro is very good and competent.”
  • “"I am a high school World History teacher. On the first day of summer vacation, I was preparing to enjoy 75 days of peace, quiet, and bliss. I was going to spend a week at Otter Crest on the beautiful Oregon Coast and then come back home to prepare for a summer of hard labor.  We were putting in a rock wall, new yard, bark mulch, gravel, concrete pad etc. However, fate had other plans for me. On the first day at the coast, I was reaching up to grab my daughter so that she and my wife could come down and look at the seals and tide pools.  Unfortunately I slipped.  I was either going to have my daughter do a face plant or I was going to take the brunt of the fall.  Obviously, my little princess won and in the process of falling, I did a matrix move and threw myself down on my arm.  It promptly dislocated from my shoulder.  Fortunately, an EMT was right behind me.  Due to the incoming tide, my location, and pain, he asked if I wanted him to put it back in.  Of course I said yes (I'm very glad I did), but the pain was excruciating and that was just the beginning of my summer and fall of discontent.  I, of course, went to Slocum Center the minute I returned home.  I had ACL surgery with Dr. Shapiro in 2011 and I was so pleased with the care and results of that surgery. I returned to Slocum Center and Dr. Shapiro again. I am so impressed with the quality of care I have received and the tremendous improvement I have seen as a result of my ACL surgery as well as my most recent situation with my arm.  The professionalism and quality of care is second to none.  In my profession as a teacher, referee, and coach, I am constantly coming into contact with people that have injured themselves. I always tell people if they want first class care, quality professionals, compassionate and caring people who really are concerned with you, then Slocum Center is really the only place to receive medical care.  The results from Slocum Center for me personally have been nothing short of miraculous.  I am just as active as ever. My knee has not slowed me down at all.  In fact, my repaired knee and leg are stronger than they have ever been.  My shoulder is feeling great despite all the tissue and muscle damage that occurred.  Slocum Center is the only place to go for your orthopedic needs.  Slocum Center Rocks!" -- Mark M.”
